What You Didn’t Know About the Mansion in ‘Outside,’ the Filipino Zombie Film on Netflix

Outside Netflix Mansion Negros Occidental - Mea in Bacolod

If you’re a Netflix binger and love a good zombie film, you’ve probably seen Outside, the Filipino zombie thriller that’s got everyone talking. The movie is intense, but what really caught my attention (and maybe yours too) was the stunning mansion featured throughout. That’s Balay Dako, and guess what? It’s a real house right here in Negros Occidental.

Built in 1925, Balay Dako is located in Brgy. Andulauan, in the city of Ilog, Negros Occidental. This historic house was owned by the Sierra family, a prominent business family originally from Palma Mallorca, Spain. Don Salvador Sierra, the head of the family, was known for his generosity and commitment to the community. The Sierra family built schools, provided healthcare, and made sure their workers were well taken care of.

Two of the most striking features of Balay Dako are its intricate bas-relief and grand staircase. The bas-relief depicts workers harvesting sugarcane, paying homage to Negros Occidental’s agricultural roots and the community spirit of Hacienda Palma. It’s a beautiful reminder of the labor-intensive sugarcane industry that shaped the Negros Island.

The grand staircase, with its bold geometric railing, reflects an Art Deco influence typical of early 20th-century architecture. The wide steps and symmetrical design add a sense of grandeur, showcasing the craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Recently, Balay Dako got a new wave of attention when it became the filming location for Outside, starring Beauty Gonzales and Sid Lucero. While the movie shows a world of terror, the real mansion is all about culture, history, and community.

So, if Outside has sparked your curiosity like it did mine, why not explore the rich history and heritage that Negros Occidental has to offer? While Balay Dako itself may not be open for visits yet, the Negros Island is filled with hidden gems—beautiful historic houses, vibrant local culture, and stories that continue to shape the community.
